Recycled carbon fibre mats for interlayer toughening of carbon fibre/epoxy composites

چکیده

• Recycled carbon fibres were used for laminate interlayer toughening. The commingled rCFs/Polyphenylene-sulfid showed excellent toughening performance. mode-I and mode-II fracture energies of the significantly increased by 220% 105%, respectively. This study demonstrated an attractive application recycled fibres. Exploring routes effective use (rCFs) is critical to close loop in life cycle work a potential using rCFs fibre/epoxy composites. Nonwoven mats based on (PPS) interlay laminate, aiming improve toughness. experimental results proved significant enhancements interlaminar properties upon interleaving, with rCF/PPS exhibiting more prominent effectiveness than rCF mats. For example, maximum increase initiation laminates was 51% 66%, respectively interleaving mats, adding rCFs/PPS fractography analysis that main mechanisms fibre debonding pulling-out bridging differences resulted opposite effects interlayer/epoxy adhesion toughness, i.e. improved but negatively affected performance

Image Characterization of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites

A new methodology to detect fibres orientation in composite materials, using image processing tools is introduced. Several examples with manufacturing defects are studied using RIMAPS technique and the Variogram method. The characterization is made from digitized images of the samples. Combined use of RIMAPS and Variogram analyses identified the orientation of fibres and determined the values o...

Load Introduction in Carbon Fibre Composites for Automotive Applications

The introduction of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics in load bearing automotive structures provides a great potential to reduce vehicle weight and fuel consumption. A reduction in overall manufacturing cost can be realised through part integration and use of cost-effective materials such as heavy tow carbon fibre. There is a current drive within the automotive industry to develop the technologi...

Influence of fibre-matrix interface on the fracture behaviour of carbon-carbon composites

This paper studies the fracture behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced carbon matrix composites and its relation with the type of fibre-matrix interface developed in the composite. Model unidirectional carbon-carbon composites were prepared using the same type of fibre and different pitches as matrix precursors. These included both commercial pitches and synthesized in the laborato...

Multi-Functional Carbon Fibre Composites using Carbon Nanotubes as an Alternative to Polymer Sizing

Carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) were introduced to the aerospace, automobile and civil engineering industries for their high strength and low weight. A key feature of CFRP is the polymer sizing - a coating applied to the surface of the carbon fibres to assist handling, improve the interfacial adhesion between fibre and polymer matrix and allow this matrix to wet-out the carbon fibres. I...

Characterization of Laccase-Treated Kenaf Fibre Reinforced Recycled Polypropylene Composites

Raw and laccase-treated kenaf fibre (KF) were used individually to reinforce recycled polypropylene (RPP) using extrusion and injection moulding. Laccase was used to modify the surface of the fibre to improve the compatibility between fibre and matrix. Enzyme concentration and soaking time were considered as the treatment parameters. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used with a...
